PVC Synthetic Leather Processing

PVC Synthetic Leather can be processed in two ways:Calender and Casting

Calender is a Machine used to produce continues sheet material from such plastics as PVC and polyethylene and consisting  essentially of two or more internally heated or cooled counter-rotating rolls between which the material passes

Calenders are also used to apply a plastics covering to backing materials such as paper, fabric and foil. In this operation the backing material and the plastics film are squeezed together to consolidate them, and fused on heated rollers

How to differentiate PU (Polyurethane) and PVC (Poly Vnyl Chloride) Synthetic Leather

As I came to the Laboratory of Synthetic Leather. I found out the way to differentiate PU (Polyurethane) and PVC (Poly Vnyl Chloride).

First you should clean the surface of the synthetic leather and then bring the synthetic leather near you ear and bend the surface of the synthetic leather so they meet surface-to-surface. Slowly you tap both surface together and release the surface.

If you hear a sound of the surface then it must be a pvc (poly vynl chloride) if it is not it should be the PU (Polyurethane) Synthetic leather

The essential raw materials for PVC are derived from salt and oil. The electrolysis of salt water produces chlorine, which is combined with ethylene, obtained from oil, to form vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Molecules of VCM are polymerised to form PVC resin, to which appropriate additives are incorporated to make a customised PVC compound

The most important element of PVC Synthetic Leather

What is the most important thing about synthetic leather ? In this issue we are going to talk about the most important elements in synthetic leather ingredients.

Different kind of emboss can be applied through the PVC and PU quality

Different kind of emboss can be applied through the PVC and PU quality

So If we are talking about PVC synthetic leather, we should discuss about these elements:

  1. The name of articles (off course)
  2. The thickness in millimeters. More thickness equals to more chemical coating and therefore affected the price of the synthetic leather
  3. The Coating. Is this a single coating or double coating? The more coating the more durability it is and more expensive.
  4. The Backing Cloth. This is the cloth underneath the coating. Can be single knit, double knit, or polylotto or any kind of fabrics. This elements define the tear strength of the PVC synthetic leather
  5. Tone Color. One tone or two tone. The two tone is usually called printing
  6. Emboss. The kind of texture of the surface coating Read more…

Save the environment by using PU and PVC synthetic leather

Consumers who still choose leather do so because they are attracted to the advertising or to the look and feel of leather, not to the fact that it comes off the backs of tortured animals. Thus, if automakers decided to use a material that looked and felt just like leather (or better), they would be praised as progressive, compassionate, ethical, and environmentally conscious and would still win the business of all consumers, including those who are attracted to the look and feel of leather.

Synthetic leather has been manufactured in the U.S. since 1963. Since then, technology has advanced, and these days, its often impossible to tell the difference between leather and synthetic leather without looking at labels. Synthetic leather is now widely used because of its uniformity, ease of care, versatility, breathability, ability to hold dye, durability, and many other advantages.

The enviromentalist choose synthetic leather

BMW and Audi already offer ‘pleather’ (synthetic leather) in some models. Jaguar UK offers synthetic leather and fabric options for all its vehicles. These days, there is a variety of luxurious synthetic leather options, so car companies can choose non-leather fabrics based on their appearance and durability. Ultrafabrics makes beautiful, soft faux leather for cars that is up to six times more durable than leather.

Textile Fabric Consultants, Inc., reports that pleather now represents the most daring and cutting-edge textile available. It is a predominant fabric in designs by Tom Ford of Gucci, Moschino, Prada, FUBU, Sean Jean and others. Top designers like Stella McCartney and Todd Oldham refuse to use leather in their designs and, in doing so, represent the sentiments of millions of consumers. Many celebrities - such as Sir Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Moby, Alicia Silverstone - also refuse to use leather.

Synthetic Leather or Pleather? same or not ?

The term pleather (”plastic leather”) is a slang term for synthetic leather made out of plastic, a portmanteau of plastic and leather, the term can be either descriptive, or derogatory, depending upon the user (the derogatory use implies use as a substitute for genuine animal hide leather to cut costs).

Pleather is often used as an inexpensive substitute for leather. Pleather may also be preferred because it is lighter than leather. Others choose to wear synthetic leather as an alternative to real leather citing reasons of animal cruelty. [2] Pleather, being made of plastic, will not decompose as quickly.

Not all pleathers are the same. Polyurethane is washable, can be dry-cleaned and allows some air to flow through the garment. PVC pleather in contrast does not “breathe” and is difficult to clean. PVC cannot be dry-cleaned because the cleaning solvents can make the PVC unbearably stiff.
